Maria Mitchell is the former Manager of Risk Management & Safety for Miami-Dade County. She has thirty years experience promoting safety, health and sustainability in the public and private sectors. Her extensive experience provided Miami-Dade County, population 2.5 million, with policies, planning and oversight for safety and health issues for the county’s 28,000 employees, 25 departments and services. Mitchell holds professional certifications including Certified Safety Manager and Certified Sustainability Manager. She has graduate and undergraduate degrees in Environmental Health from the University of Miami and University of Georgia. She is an Adjunct Professor at Florida International University. She serves on the Leadership Board of the NSC Government and Public Sector Division and is co-editor of the NSC Public Eye on Safety Library. She serves on the AIHA Program Content Committee. She is also co-editor of the State of Florida Occupational Injury Coalition Journal. In 2017, she was elected Councilwoman of the City of Miami Springs , Florida (population 14,000).
