  • The risk of hydrocarbon contamination seeping into the ground and surface water reservoirs is always present when handling large volumes of fuel such as diesel, jet fuel and or mineral oils such as transformer oils used in electrical power transmission.

    To address these issues, the use of secondary containment measures such berms and hydrocarbon filters is a common practice, particularly for remote and/or temporary sites such as those utilized by excavation companies, militaries, and pumping stations. In the event of valve failure or tank rupture, the resultant spill is contained within a berm or containment vault which can later be emptied using vacuum trucks.

    However, this approach may not be effective (financially and operationally) when berms are located in open areas subject to seasonal precipitations. For instance, high rainfall is experienced in parts of North America, potentially filling up a berm in a couple of hours. This increases the chance of small quantities of spilled hydrocarbons to be carried over to the surrounding environment.

    To prevent this, berms require proper drainage that safely filters the water out of the berm while capturing any hydrocarbon contamination. A similar solution is also critical for other facilities such as pumping stations, fueling stations, and power transfer stations where there is a continuous presence of water (e.g., for washing, rain, surplus water, etc.,) that may carry the existing small spills into waterways.

    Using gravity to filter contaminates such as diesel or jet fuel, gasoline and transformer oil from rainwater, the Spill Monkey allows operators to safely drain overflow from containers, water reservoirs and berms which need to remain empty to have the capacity to contain any spills.
