CEU Guidelines
The following guidelines relate to the awarding of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to those who attend the NSC 2009 Congress & Expo and/or successfully complete the NSC 2009 Professional Development Seminars.
For both Continuing of Certification (COC) and Certification Maintenance (CM) points, it is the individual's responsibility to submit the appropriate documentation directly to the governing body (either the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, BCSP, or the American Board of Industrial Hygiene, ABIH) to receive proper credit. Questions regarding certification should be directed to either the BCSP or the ABIH.
Please use approval code 09-2091 when submitting documentation to the ABIH.
What is a CEU, COC or CM and who awards these?

Continuing Education Unit (CEU) |
The National Safety Council awards CEUs to those who successfully complete NSC courses, including Professional Development Seminars offered at the NSC 2009 Congress & Expo. In doing so, NSC follows the guidelines established by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). While some organizers actually submit their materials and pay a fee to the IACET to receive their endorsement, NSC does not do this. No organization is required to do this, and in reality, anyone can award credit and call it a CEU. We do, however, follow the guidelines on which IACET bases their endorsement. Because of this, and our reputation as a deliverer of high quality education and training programs, most organizations and schools recognize CEUs awarded by NSC. If an organization were to question the validity of our CEUs since we don't have the IACET "seal of approval" we would simply show that organization how we've followed the guidelines that IACET established.

Continuance of Certification (COC) |
The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) is the organization responsible for administering the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation.
NSC 2009 Congress & Expo: The BCSP will award 0.5 COC for at least one full day, but less than two days of attendance at the NSC 2009 Congress & Expo. For two or more days of attendance, 1.0 COC will be awarded. No points are awarded for less than one full day of attendance.
|
Certification Maintenance (CM) |
The American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) is the organization responsible for administering the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation. The ABIH does not establish an equivalency between CEUs and CM points. Instead, they require an organization like NSC, to submit for their approval, a description of the Congress & Expo and Professional Development Seminars.
NSC 2009 Congress & Expo: The ABIH will award 0.5 Safety CM points for each half-day of attendance at the NSC 2009 Congress & Expo. For 2009, NSC has received ABIH approval for the awarding of Safety CM points for attendance at Congress & Expo, as well as the awarding of either IH or Safety CM points for each of the NSC 2009 Congress & Expo Professional Development Seminars (PDS). In general, 0.5 CM points are earned for every half-day of participation in an NSC 2009 Congress & Expo PDS.

Professional Development Seminars (PDS) |
Upon completion of a Professional Development Seminar (PDS), students will be provided with a certification form documenting the successful completion of that PDS. This form is handed out to the students at the end of the seminar and serves as the official documentation of the CEU/COC/CM points they have earned at that PDS. It is the student's responsibility to submit that form to the appropriate governing organization (either the BCSP or ABIH) in order to receive credit towards maintaining their certification. NSC will not submit forms directly to the BCSP or ABIH on behalf of any students.
